A CFD-Based Comparison of Different Positive Displacement Pumps for Application in Future Automatic Transmission Systems

The efficiency requirements for hydraulic pumps applied in automatic transmissions future generations of automobiles will increase continuously. In addition, the must be able to cope with multiphase flows a certain extent. Given this background, balanced vane pump (BVP), an internal gear (IGP) and three-dimensional geared tumbling multi chamber (TMC) are analyzed compared by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) approach ANSYS CFX TwinMesh. Furthermore, test bench measurements conducted obtain experimental data validate numerical results. obtained results show reasonable agreement data. first CFD setup, conveying characteristics pure oil regarding volumetric efficiencies, cavitation onset pressure ripple compared. Both IGP BVP high efficiencies low ripples whereas TMC shows weaker performance these objectives. second oil-bubbly air flow different inlet volume fractions (IGVF) is investigated. It can shown that free changes pumping significantly increasing mass diminishing as well required driving torque. compression ratios appear important parameter determines how handled ripple. Overall, both similar strong without air. current development state, inferior because its lower ratio therefore needs further optimization.
